Fantasy Football – Early Edition

I have been thinking a while to move away from the personal aspect of this blog and this will be my first stab at it. I love sports and the aspect of betting on them.  To me and maybe many out there, fantasy sports keep me more in depth in the league or any sport instead of just my favorite teams, the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies, Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche not in any particular order.

Since 1998 I have been involved in a league or two.  But always involved with the original league, the great friends that I would call family.  The weekend or Sunday of fun, food, and raising hell, giving crap to the other participants.  Good American Football fun.  Whether it is the players they pick, the team they cheer for, or past fantasy teams and drafts.  Yes, I am or at least was the slowest picking SOB on the clock even in the early rounds and first pick.  Still get hell for that but I do have my stuff together and quick to pick.  I don’t toot my own horn but do find myself up in the playoffs often… Any Mid-America guys reading this, disregard that last sentence.

I am not here to give away strategies but suggestions. First I love the way we draft on Labor day weekend, it weeds out most injuries during training camps and pre-season football.  I never use the books or magazines because I could have bought one in June and they do not pull them until November, which really is pointless because depth charts and position battles with rookies and new players are non-existent in them and you have to know or research current rosters for injuries and depth charts, so I just use websites like ESPN or CBS sports for rankings and current rosters.  But if you do need a general idea or checklist of players they will benefit you in that way.

I also love the live, in-person draft, just more comradery and substance goes into it.  Whether you team up with a buddy who isn’t right before or right after you in the draft order.  Or you are yelling out “you suck I was just fixing to pick him,” most likely that is a kicker…. :).  I just love draft day and cannot wait until labor day weekend this year and it is only a month and some days away.  I also do a live online draft, all though much easier to execute, it just doesn’t have that ol’ talking crap atmosphere that goes along with the sport.

For the beginner, I suggest just printing off a ranking system from a major site like I suggested.  I don’t do the individual defensive player leagues but hear they are great fun.  The scoring system is just too much for me to wrap my head around.  And with 18 years in the same league, I just prefer the team defenses.  But back to joining a league, get a couple buddies together, I would suggest 10 but 12 or more are better.  To me, 12 or more makes for a better strategy to have to pick players because it thins the player pool out.  You can set up fantasy leagues on many websites for free.  I personally like yahoo’s draft setup for live drafts and whether you decide to live draft online or draft in person, which means a league commissioner has to go input teams and players, so a little more work…. don’t mess up the teams, either way, yahoo works great.

Good luck to all the Fantasy Team GMs should be another fun year.  I will leave you with some early rankings that you probably know or emulate what you have seen.

If you have a league just provide a link in the comments if positions need to be filled.

I will provide the first 144 players and how I would draft them and if you are new to this, my suggestion is to make your best judgment on the depth of your team, for example, I personally wouldn’t draft two QBs back to back.
